About the area

The area around Yialiskari Bay is a pretty and unspoiled part of the island which provided inspiration for Lawrence Durrell, whose novel “Prospero’s Cell” was written during his stay at The White House in Kalami.

If you are exploring on foot, Kalami is only a few minutes down the hill. The little pebble beach in Yialiskari Bay itself is even closer and from there you can access the coastal path to Agni – the next bay along.  The shrine of St. Arsenius, which was used as the location for Margo’s sunbathing spot in the TV Series “The Durrells” is just a little further beyond Agni.

boat hire

Your best option is to explore the coast by boat. Small boats can be hired without a licence. The boat rental staff are very good at explaining everything you need to know. Simply drop your anchor to swim directly from the boat or pull in at a taverna for lunch – they always have someone to help you with the boat.

Kouloura, a little harbour dating back to Byzantine times with an impressive fortified private house directly on the water is a great spot for lunch, as is the taverna in Kerasia in the next bay along. A little further up are Agios Stephanos, Avlaki and Kassiopi, and in the other direction you have Nisaki and Glyfa. All the while you can stop to swim in bays that can only be reached by boat.
